Most of us have accidentally spent a bit more than we intended to on a pair of new shoes before.
That said, most of us probably haven’t spent the price of a one bedroom flat (outside of London, obviously) on a pair of battered trainers.
To be fair, these aren’t just any trainers. These are the trainers worn by Micheal Jordan in the 1984 summer Olympics basketball game.
The shoes are heavily worn (as you can see from the photo) and Jordan has left his orthopaedic insert in there, which is nice of him. They’re also autographed.
They were sold at auction in Arizona, and they’re now the most expensive pair of game-worn shoes ever to sell.
Auction company SCP Auctions gave the following statement, saying that the shoes were:
…one of the most coveted artifacts from Michael Jordan’s legendary playing career: the actual shoes he wore in the 1984 Olympic Finals against Spain on August 10, 1984, at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. These historic sneakers are the last pair Jordan wore in competition as an amateur and represent perhaps his crowning athletic achievement before turning professional and starting his NBA legacy with the Chicago Bulls.
The sale of these trainers broke the standing world record for game-worn trainers, which was £82,418. The previous record was also for a pair of Jordan’s trainers, the ones that he wore during game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, which is known as the “Flu Game”, as he played with flu symptoms.
