Kaizer Chiefs claimed the last berth in the Nedbank Cup semifinals with a 2-0 win over Cape Town City in Mbombela on Sunday.
The Glamour Boys join first-division outfit TS Galaxy, as well as premier league sides Lamontville Golden Arrows and Chippa United in the last four of the competition.
They signalled their intentions early on as City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh was called upon inside the first five minutes – denying George Maluleka with a superb save.
In the hot Mbombela sun, the players were urged to take a water break halfway through the first half, and the stoppage seemed to have rejuvenated Chiefs, who grabbed the lead through Pule Ekstein in the 30th minute.
Following the manner that Chiefs started the first half, the Citizens came out guns blazing in the second, and they could have had an early reward if it wasn’t for the post, which denied Surprise Ralani the equaliser.
However, the next goal would come from the men in gold as Dumisani Zuma, who came on on the halfway mark in place of Ramahlwe Mphahlele, doubled the lead to send Chiefs two up with 35 minutes remaining.
Further chances fell in City’s path, but the men in blue could not make the necessary inroads to halt the Soweto giants’ path to a possible first trophy since 2015.
