Roger Federer will meet Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s Shanghai Masters final after he overcame Juan Martin del Potro in three sets. The Wimbledon champion dropped the opening set but battled back to win 3-6 6-3 6-3 in just shy of two hours. Federer’s victory means he will now face his old rival and current world No.1 Nadal for the 38th time in a final.
Del Potro came into the match nursing a wrist injury he picked up during his quarter-final win over Viktor Troicki. But the Argentine showed no ill-effects early on and took the opening set 6-3, but was unable to sustain his his dominance of the match and allowed Federer to stage a recovery.
‘I thought it was a really good match. Some big points, important shots at the right time for both guys sometimes to stay even, and we both created chances,’ Federer said. ‘I thought we were able to keep up the level from the beginning till the very end…I enjoyed it because it was slices and topspins and angles and power and finesse. I think the match had a bit of everything.’
