Several Nigerian nationals living in South Africa have taken to the streets of Pretoria to protest against the controversial notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in their country home.
They took to the streets on Wednesday after Nigerians experienced a black Tuesday when soldiers allegedly shot at unarmed #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll gate in Lagos.
They have been embarking on a peaceful protest for nearly two weeks requesting for an end to police brutality, and an end to SARS which was accused of extortion, harassment, torture, and murders.
Despite the squad being disbanded 10 days ago, the protests continued as the government replaced it with SARS.
Rights groups claimed that over 20 people were killed overnight.
The protesters wearing black t-shirts and colors of the Nigerian flag, marched to the Nigerian Embassy in Pretoria.
They explained that SARS was a reflection of the ongoing corrupt leadership in Nigeria.
A protester said “there has been a lot of unlawful killings in Nigeria and brutality from the police and army. Now the youth has woken up and we’re saying they should stop killing us.”
Some of them called out President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and accused them of putting the country into debt, corruption, and gross human rights violations.
“He is an idiot…We need a change, we are tired of him, his an old man, and he is not thinking right anymore. We want him to address the protesters, if he can’t, he should leave the position,” said another protester.
Demonstrators also appealed to governments of other African countries to intervene.
