Madonna has been slammed by many on social media after she posted a video on Instagram calling the COVID-19 pandemic ‘the great equalizer’. She also said that the coronavirus outbreak “does not care how rich and famous you are”. The 61-year-old singer-songwriter posted the video on her Instagram account on Sunday, March 22, while naked in a bathtub. In the video, she can be seen surrounded by candles and wearing only jewelry, to a background of ominous instrumental music.
The ‘A League of Their Own’ star preaches to her fans from her tub, saying: “That’s the thing about COVID-19. It doesn’t care about how rich you are, how famous you are, how funny you are. How smart you are, where you live, how old you are, what amazing stories you can tell.
“It’s the great equalizer and what’s terrible about it is what’s great about it. What’s terrible about it is that it’s made us all equal in many ways, and what’s wonderful about is, is that it’s made us all equal in many ways.”
“Like I used to say at the end of human nature every night if the ship goes down, we’re all going down together,” she continued while seemingly trying to look sultry at the same time.
In the same Sunday post, she also shared a picture of herself posing with two large roses covering her chest. She captioned her post: “No discrimination – Covid-19! #quarantine #covid_19 #staysafe.”
However, her bathtub sermon has not gone down well with her 14.9 million followers as she faced a lot of backlash online. One user commented, “Sorry my queen, love u so much, but we’re not equal. We can die from the same diseases, but the poor will suffer the most. Do not romanticize nothing of this tragedy.’
Another person wrote, “Bull shit I still got to go to work while you are taking a bubble bath with flowers bath bombs and all kinds of treats.” A third tried to give Madonna a reality check by saying: “If the ship is going down, do you really think we’re going down together while you’re in your bathtub having people working for you to be there? I love you, my queen. But things outside your mansion are very different from what you think. Stay safe and a be a little more empathic to the less privileged ones.”
However, Madonna is not the only celebrity who has posted on the coronavirus and met with severe backlash. Recently, Playboy model Victoria Bonya has said that it is better to lose half of mankind than the whole of planet Earth. “Sorry, but I just have to share this, it is all in our interest. Our planet is ruined. For me, it is better to lose half of humanity instead of losing the whole planet. Myself, I am ready to die as well just to save our world,” the model-turned-actress said in her video post on Instagram, referring to the coronavirus outbreak.
The new coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and the disease caused by it, Covid-19, was soon declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30 2020 by WHO. The pandemic has since affected over 300,000 people worldwide and claimed lives of more than 14,000.
