South Africans love their food and Cape Town has a variety of markets to help any food lover.
Markets are where food is the focus whether fresh produce or gourmet delights – generally, the kind where you can sit down and eat something while you’re there.
1. Oranjezicht City Farm Market
Despite its name, this farmers’ market is actually located at Granger Bay at the V&A Waterfront, and runs every Saturday and Sunday morning – and Wednesday evenings.
This market is a relaxed and festive place to do your weekly food shopping. You can find all things organic, fresh-from-the-patch veggies and herbs, fruit, bread, organic dairy products, free-range eggs, raw honey, muesli, ethically sourced meats and seafood stalls. You can also find a wide variety of cooked and raw dishes for all palates and preferences. A plus is also finding clothing, vintage items, shoes, houseplants and farm-to-vase flowers on sale.
2. The Neighbourgoods Market
Dubbed as The Old Biscuit Mill, this market quickly established itself as a catalyst for – and celebration of – the urban renaissance that has seen the once dilapidated neighbourhood of Woodstock become the thriving heart of the city’s creative industries.
This award-winning market features over 100 speciality traders, creating a weekly platform for local farmers, fine-food purveyors, organic merchants, bakers, grocers, mongers, butchers, artisanal producers and celebrated local chefs to showcase and sell their delicious wares every Saturday.
3. Bay Harbour Market
Located at the edge of the sea overlooking Chapman’s Peak at the foot of the famous Hangberg Mountain, this once-abandoned factory is now the legendary Bay Harbour Market, home to over 100 entrepreneurial traders, who attract over 24000 visitors a month locally and from across the globe. This market’s atmosphere is nice and cosy, with a fireplace and live music, which is ideal for friends and families to gather at. Expect a wide variety of food offerings, craft beer on tap, cultural curios, organic products, clothing items and unique artwork.
4. Blaauwklippen Family Market
The Blaauwklippen Family Market has become renowned for being the best way to spend a Sunday in the Western Cape. Not only are there a wide range of mouth-watering foods and creative crafts, but there’s also fantastic entertainment and plenty of space for the kids to run free and play.
In addition to food stalls, crafts, wine tastings, and entertainment for the kids, its location on one of the oldest and most picturesque wine estates in South Africa make it a wonderful day out.
5. Friday Night Market at Boschendal
There is no better way to end the week off than with a glass of Boschendal MCC, fresh oysters and local live music.
Friday Night Market winery is a scenic setting, with a maze of wonderful gardens and magnificent mountain views.
There is also a Tree House Playground for kids aged 4-14 years at an R150 entrance fee, all-inclusive: Supervision, play, stargazing, games, drumming, activities, outdoor cinema, boerewors rolls, bottomless popcorn and farm cordials. The pump track will also be open for kids with bikes and helmets. Stalls change every week.
