SA musicians who experimented with Amapiano

Amapiano is not just a genre but a movement and it’s the biggest and reigning sound in South Africa.

Between 2020 and 2021, the sound has gained amazing recognition, even at the international level; thanks to Kabza De Small, Busta 929, MFR Souls and a few others.

Seeing how huge the sound is, some musicians in SA experimented with the sound, seeing if it would work for them or not.

While some artists are now faces of the famous genre, others are trying to find a stand in the genre.

Lets take a look at some of these artists that experimented with Amapiano, including those who tried resurrecting their career with the genre.

1. MAJOR LEAGUE DJz

Major League DJz are known to have spent years in the industry and they’ve recorded good amount of success. However, the music producers experimented with the genre and it treated them well, hence they dumped hip hop genre to becoming top amapiano DJz with the weekly release of amapiano mix known as Balcony Mix.

2. CASSPER NYOVEST

Cassper Nyovest’s move to amapiano has garnered lots of controversies, as the rapper hyped the genre and at some point mocked SA hip hop industry. Mufasa has dropped amapiano singles, and he will soon be releasing an amapiano project.

3. KHULI CHANA

Khuli Chana is a friend to Cassper, and he’s also released an amapiano song.

4. DJ Maphorisa

The South African multi-talented music producer is known to be functional in all SA genres. Lawd Phori is a seasonal artist, as he jumps on any big sound reigning at a particular season. Now, he has a strong hold on amapiano, as he’s partnered himself with Kabza De Small. The name of their group is Scorpion Kings.

5. HEAVY K

Heavy K followed DJ Maphorisa’s advice on dumping House Music for amapiano. The house DJ experimented in a recent gig as he drifted into amapiano sound after playing a house music, and it moved the crowd, as everyone screamed and looked excited. Afterwards, Heavy K returned to social media, announcing that he has an amapiano project on the way.

Other artists who hint at dropping an amapiano song include, Lady Zamar and Donald (Working with DJ Lady Du). Meanwhile, Reece Madlisa also revealed that Rap star, Reece will also work with him on an amapiano song soon.
