Over the past 8 months, the Hawks have been investigating the death of a Cape Town police constable – Thando Sigcu who got shot in January by a city law enforcement officer.
The incident that led to Const Thando Sigcu’s death in the Cape Town city centre was when the 38-year old was in the process of arresting a robbery suspect until two law-enforcement officers got to the scene.
Thereafter, “shots were discharged and the constable was fatally wounded”. The Hawks had to take over the investigation.
“The investigation has been finalised and the docket has been submitted to the director of public prosecutions for a prosecutorial decision,” said Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Philani Nkwalase.
However, the SA Police and Allied Workers’ Union has urged the NPA to take the case into priority.
“We are delighted the investigation has been finalised and all necessary evidence required by the prosecution has been gathered,” said spokesperson Linda Bhayi.
“Now it’s time for the suspect to appear before a court of law, and for justice to take its course. We hope the prosecution will deal with this matter expeditiously. We will monitor this case closely.”
Police minister – Bheki Cele declared on July the reason for the delay. He said it was because detectives were finding it hard to get an eyewitness living on the streets.
Cele also said the prosecution requested for an eyewitness’s statement so as to solidify the case.
