Two young men have been confirmed dead after they were fatally shot by the police in Rwanda for defying COVID-19 lockdown orders imposed by the government to curb the spread of the virus.
The two men in their twenties “attempted to tussle with officers,” Rwanda National Police spokesman John Bosco Kabera said by phone Wednesday, Bloomberg reports.
In a related development, another man in Rwanda who breached the ongoing lockdown to reportedly go fishing has been killed and eaten by a crocodile, the mayor of the southern Kamonyi district has told the BBC.
Alice Kayitesi said the Wednesday morning incident happened in the Nyabarongo River.
“He had broken the stay-home rule, he’s among very few people here who are not co-operating with the lockdown to stop the [corona] virus,” Ms Kayitesi said.
Rwanda began a two-week lockdown on March 22, restricting travel between towns and cities and asking people to stay indoors after the East African nation confirmed 40 COVID-19 cases.
