7 things you should never say during a job interview

There are some things that can go wrong during a job interview and prevent you from landing the gig.

Sometimes, it’s even because of something that you’ve said. Here are some things you want to avoid saying during a job interview  so that you don’t ruin your chances of landing the job.

1. In 5 years, I hope to be in your position
When you are asked where you see yourself in 5 years, this is not the answer that you want to give. First of all, it comes off as a lazy answer. And even beyond that, are you really threatening the position of the person who decides whether or not you get hired?

2. I didn’t like my previous boss
The last thing that you want to do at a job interview is badmouth your former company or boss. That just shows that you’re not loyal and that you won’t keep the privacy of the company that you’re interviewing for.

3. My biggest weakness is that I’m a perfectionist
When you’re asked what your weaknesses are, don’t try to earn points by calling strengths weaknesses. And if you’re genuinely having trouble coming up with something then asking your former coworkers or boss can be helpful.

4. What does your company do?
It’s alright to have questions about the place where you’re looking to work. However, you really shouldn’t be asking questions that can be answered with a 5 minute Google search. That just shows the interviewer that you have done no research on the company.

5. What do your perks and benefits look like?
Yes, it’s unwise to take any job without knowing what your employee benefits will be. But you should never bring it up early in the interview process, because it will only make the employer question your true intentions. Remember, the first few interviews are meant to determine whether you should continue to be in the running for the position. So topics involving perks and benefits are irrelevant if you don’t even make it past those early rounds.

6. How soon do you promote employees
An individual asking this question may come off as arrogant and entitled. A better way to ask this? “I’m really interested in staying at a place for a while. What do career paths within the company typically look like?”

7. Sorry I’m so late
Just be on time. Enough said.
