The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace might be a Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the manager capital of the African country (Ivory Coast).
They constructed the basilica between 1985 and 1989 with different cost estimates given by various groups. Guinness World Records lists it because the most important church on the planet, having surpassed the previous record-holder, St. Peter’s Basilica, upon completion. It is a region of 30,000 square meters (320,000 sq ft) and is 158 meters (518 ft) high.
The Basilica of Peter in Citta del Vaticano inspired the designs of the dome and plaza but it isn’t an exact replica. It is important we don’t confuse the Basilica with a cathedral; it isn’t. Our Lady of Peace is found within the Diocese of Yamoussoukro; the Cathedral of Saint Augustine but 3 km (1.9 mi) away is smaller than the basilica but it is the main place they worship and is also the seat of the bishop of the diocese.
They constructed the building using imported Italian marble. This marble contains twenty-four glass windows and one that resembles President Houphouet-Boigny with Jesus and his disciples.
They used west African Iroko wood for the 7,000 pews. Two identical villas sit before the structure. One house priests who operate the basilica and so the opposite is reserved for papal visits. The basilica’s circular colonnade is made of 272 Doric columns.
The only real-time the basilica was filled was on February 7, 1994, for President Houphouët-Boigny’s funeral. About 17% of people in Ivory Coast are known as catholic. However, Islam is the main religion of the state. The basilica is gone by Polish Pallottines at a price of US$1.5 million annually.
